Ed Wiley III, who was born in Baltimore and raised in Philadelphia, developed his passion for cooking at an early age, working in the family catering business. He learned under the watchful eye of his father, who in addition to being a world-renowned jazz saxophonist was a culinary genius. In 2008, he and his wife Yalem, opened a restaurant, The Prime Smokehouse, in Garner, N.C. They later moved to a larger venue in Raleigh, where its reputation soared as an all-star supper club, featuring live jazz. The prestige did not go unnoticed by city officials from Rocky Mount, N.C., who encouraged them to relocate the restaurant to the newly developing downtown.
For eight years straight, The Prime Smokehouse has been ranked No. 1 on every reputable online medium (including Yelp!, TripAdvisor, Google Reviews, Gluten-Free App), local Readers’ Choice Awards and area chambers of commerce business rankings. The restaurant has been featured in Our State magazine as well as PBS Television’s “Weekend Edition.” The Prime Smokehouse was recently named the No. 1 travel destination in the state of North Carolina, and has been recognized as such by Gov. Cooper, Rep. Butterfield, Sen. Tillis and National Restaurant Association. Wiley and Yalem were also named North Carolina Main Street Champions for “their commitment to downtown improvements and strong communities.”
